Despite a boat load of left-handed outfielders currently on the Toronto Blue Jays roster, it’s getting hard to ignore RJ Screck’s performance with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
The 25-year-old was the star of the Bisons’ 6-4 victory over the Syracuse Mets in the first of two games the two teams played on Sunday. In the top of the first, Schreck took the fifth-ranked New York Mets prospect Jack Wenninger deep for his sixth home run of the season. It came off the bat at 107.2 mph, and travelled a distance of 372 feet.
A scoreless second inning saw the Bisons enter the top of the third up 1-0. They hit two one-out singles, then grounded out to bring up Schreck. On a 1-1 pitch, the outfielder hit an 83.4 mph changeup a distance of 358 feet with an exit velocity of 93.4 mph.
Schreck walked and scored in his final plate appearances in this game, as the Bisons won 6-4. Things didn’t go their way in the second game, falling 1-0 with just two hits. That game saw Schreck go 0-3 with two strikeouts.
Heading into the Bisons next series, a six-game home stand against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Schreck is slashing .229/.374/.433 with seven home runs in 195 plate appearances, good for a 117 wRC+. The outfielder’s K% sits at just 19%, while often drawing a free pass with his 16.4 BB%.
Other notes…
The Bisons won the first game of the doubleheader 6-4, and then lost the second game 1-0. Schreck’s two home runs were the lone-extra bases of the evening. Brendon Little’s outing in the loss is the only notable piece of news from those two games, striking out two over two innings of work.
Over in High-A, the Vancouver Canadians lost their series finale to Spokane, dropping a 7-6 decision. Alexis Hernandez hit another double, while J.R. Freethy hit his fourth and fifth double of the season. Catcher Hayden Gilliland hit the team’s lone home run.
It was Johnny King’s first tough start in High-A, getting one out as he gave up five earned runs, three walks, and four hits, one of which was a home run. With this performance, the left-handed pitcher’s ERA rose from 0.99 to 2.60.
The Canadians return home this coming week to face the Eugene Emeralds. Nolan Perry will start Tuesday’s game in what is a must-watch game.
Lastly from Sunday’s slate of games, the Single-A Dunedin won their fourth consecutive game, defeating the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Sunday. The biggest note from this game was that 2025 draftee Blaine Bullard hit his fifth home run of the season, one of just three hits they had in this game.
THE BLAINE TRAIN CANNOT BE STOPPED! @BlueJays No. 15 prospect Blaine Bullard drills a go-ahead two-run homer in the 6th at 106.2 mph🚀
Another thing worth noting is that Jake Bloss made the start in his third rehab appearance of the season. With Dylan Cease placed on the injured list on Monday, getting their top upper-minor pitching prospect back in the mix is super important for the Jays.
The D-Jays head to Clearwater to take on the Threshers for six games.
There was no Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats game on Sunday, as that game was rained out. They’ll hit the road to face the New York Yankees’ affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, this week.
As for Saturday’s slate of games, the Bisons were rained out, playing that make-up game on Sunday. The D-Jays were the lone Blue Jays’ “A” affiliate to win their game, as shortstop prospect Juan Sanchez went 3-5 with his fourth double of the season. Eric Snow and David Beckles had two-hit games as well.
The Canadians fell 10-7 to Spokane, with Freethy hitting his first home run of the season. Hernandez hit two doubles, while Peyton Williams hit his ninth double of the season. Danny Thompson Jr. allowed three earned over four and two-thirds innings.
In Double-A, the high-scoring Fisher Cats were held to just two runs in a 3-2 loss. Arjun Nimmala hit his fourth double since joining the Fisher Cats, while Eddie Micheletti Jr. hit his eight double of the season. Jackson Wentworth went five innings with one earned run against.
While the D-Jays were the lone “A” affiliate to win, the Florida Complex League Blue Jays picked up a 5-4 victory over the FCL Tigers. Canadian Sam White hit his fourth home run of the season, while pitching prospect Miguel Pantoja allowed his first earned runs of the season, going 4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.
The FCL Jays were the lone team in action on Monday, defeating the FCL Yankees by a score of 8-3 to move their season record to 8-3. Andres Arias and Brock Tibbitts each hit their second home run of the season, while Canadian Sam Shaw hit his second home run of the season on his rehab assignment. Catcher Franklin Rojas drove in a run and hit his fourth double of the season.
Starting that game for the FCL Jays was Shane Bieber, who struck out three and allowed three hits in two innings of work. It was his first rehab outing. Picking up the win was Giacomo Taschin, who struck out three in two and one-third scoreless innings to bring his season ERA to 1.42.
