The Toronto Blue Jays experienced a ton of success from a pitching development side in 2025.
Trey Yesavage dominated his way to the big leagues, Gage Stanifer and Johnny King showed they are quick risers, and the Jays capitalized on the success of Khal Stephen, Kendry Rojas, and Juaron Watts-Brown at the trade deadline to help with their postseason push.
For Nolan Perry, the right-hander had to miss out on the development party after undergoing UCL surgery in late 2024, which caused him to miss out on the entire 2025 season.
While he wasn’t part of the group of pitchers that exploded on the scene last season, Perry is carving his own path this campaign, which has seen him become an early riser in the farm system.
The New Mexico product started the year in Single-A Dunedin, making five appearances (four starts) to the tune of a 1.71 ERA and a 2.49 FIP. He struck out 32 batters with a clean 13.7 K/9 rate while holding opponents to a 2.57 BB/9 and a stellar .189 BABIP, .205 OBP, and a .462 OPS. With the Blue Jays, Perry allowed just eight hits and four earned runs across 21 innings of work.
For his stellar outing against Clearwater on April 16th, where he struck out 12 across five innings of work, Perry earned the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honours.
On May 3rd, the organization moved Perry to High-A Vancouver, where Perry would face his next test in the hitter-friendly Northwest League. The 22-year-old would get his first start against the Eugene Emeralds on May 8th, going five innings with three hits and one earned run allowed, a solo jack on an inside pitch that caught a bit too much of the plate. That would be his only blemish on the evening, with Perry striking out eight with just one walk.
Fast forward to yesterday, and Perry made his second start for the Canadians against the Everett AquaSox. The former 12th-round pick in 2022 improved from his previous outing by going another five innings but allowing zero runs with just three hits. He saw an increase in his walks (three) but struck out 10 in the outing to earn his first win of the season (and with Vancouver).
Across his two outings with the Canadians, Perry owns a 0.90 ERA with 18 strikeouts through 10 innings of work while holding opponents to a .176 average.
The biggest test for Perry will be seeing whether he can continue this impressive trend as the season continues and he faces similar teams across a full season. While he won’t progress at a Yesavage-like rocket speed through the farm system, there is a chance Perry finishes the year in Double-A New Hampshire with a cup of coffee in the Eastern League before the end of the year.
