It’s that time of the year.
With the 2024 MLB Draft just over a month away, it’s time to look at some draft candidates for the Blue Jays. This season, they’ll pick 20th overall for the second consecutive season, as well as picks at the 59th, 95th, 125th, 136th, and the 158th positions.
On top of that, the Blue Jays have a bonus pool of $8,987,000 for the first 10 rounds (or 11 picks). Afterwards, players signed for $150k or less don’t count towards the bonus pool.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the first draft prospect profile for the 2024 draft.

Cam Caminiti’s bio

In two of the last three drafts, the Blue Jays have selected a large left-handed pitcher in the first three rounds. That trend came to an end last season, but Cam Caminiti may tickle the Blue Jays fancy.
Standing at 6’2”, 195, the left-handed pitcher attends Saguaro High School in Arizona and is set to attend Louisiana State University after his senior year. He ranks as MLB Pipeline’s 17th-best draft prospect.
The last time the Blue Jays selected a player from the state of Arizona was back in 2021 when they selected Cooper Benson with the 512 overall pick. The last time a high school prep player was selected was back in 2016, when they selected Casey Legumina as a hedge pick in the 25th-round, but he didn’t sign.
Their last high school pitcher from the state of Arizona that signed was Patrick Murphy, who was selected in the third round of the 2013 draft and even landed on the team’s Top 30 prospect list.

Cam Caminiti’s stuff

Like many high school players, Caminiti is a two-way player, but his future lies on the mound. The fastball sits 93-95 mph, but has touched 98 mph and there’s even more in the tanka according to his MLB Pipeline bio.
On top of good velocity at a young age, Caminiti does a good job commanding his pitches and hides his delivery well. The 17-year-old lefty also features a curveball and a slider, but those are less developed than the fastball. Recently, he added a changeup which has become “an above-average offering” according to his Pipeline bio.

Will the Blue Jays select Cam Caminiti?

The Blue Jays don’t have a preference on what type of player they use their first round pick comes for. Since 2020, they’ve selected one prep arm, one college arm, one prep position player, and one college position player.
However, it seems unlikely they’ll go down the route of the prep arm, as their most recent prep pitcher (Brandon Barriera), underwent Tommy John surgery in recent months. Still, they do like their hard-throwing left-handed pitchers.
