The first reliever of the day has been chosen.
With the 424th overall pick, the Blue Jays selected Joe Vogatsky, a right-handed reliever from James Madison University.
Last season with the Dukes, he posted a 3.34 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched. He also had a 21.7 K% and an 11.3 BB% in 2023. For his collegiate career, he had a 6.43 ERA, a 23 K% and a 10.6 BB%.
Vogatsky also pitched three seasons of summer ball, where he fared much better (and actually pitched more often). He posted a 2.57 in 84 innings pitched, along with a 24.2 K% and an 8.6 BB%. He pitched in the Cape Cod League this past season, posting a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched.
From what I can tell, he has a fastball that sits low 90s, a curveball that sits low 70s,, and a slider that sits mid-high 70s.
Vogatsky started a few games prior to this season, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Jays leave him as such, or stretch him out as they did with Devereaux Harrison, Pat Gallagher, and Ryan Jennings, relievers who they drafted last season.
