In this article, we’ll look at another 2022 draftee.
Just a quick recap of the mid-season list: We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and finally other publications (Prospects Live, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America)’ scouting reports.
Let’s take a look at Josh Kasevich.
Getting to know Josh Kasevich
Position: Shortstop/Third base
Throws: Right
Born: January 17, 2001
Acquired: 2nd round, 2022 draft (Blue Jays)
Current Team: High-A Vancouver
Previous Ranking: 15
The 22-year-old shortstop is playing his first full season in the Blue Jays organization, and is slashing .287/.363/.358 with three homers in 336 plate appearances with Vancouver. Furthermore, he also has a 9.5 BB% and an 11.6 K%.
Kasevich was selected in the second round of the 2022 draft, and played his first season with the Dunedin Blue Jays, helping them push for a playoff spot to end the 2022 season. With the Single-A team in 2022, he slashed .262/.344/.336 with no homers in 122 plate appearances, along with a higher BB% (9%) than K% (7.4%).
Without question, Kasevich has a hit-over-power profile. He has impressive contact skills which is showcased by his lack of strikeouts and solid walk rates. Moreover, he does a good job of using all fields to get on base. The power is a work in progress, but he may be able to hit around 10 homers a season.
Kasevich also plays great shortstop, as he has superb instincts and soft hands and feet at the position. Not only that, but Kasevich also has a strong arm that will help him stay on the left side of the infield. He is an average runner.
It may be a few years before Kasevich makes the major leagues, but if he’s able to continue to hit for average while playing good defensively at shortstop, he’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
