Another day, and another strong outing from a Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect.
On Wednesday night, Toronto Blue Jays’ sixth-ranked prospect Gage Stanifer, who is in Double-A with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, continued the good run he’s found himself on over May.
Facing the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, Stanifer turned in a pitching line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, allowing one earned run or fewer for the fourth straight outing.
With the five innings, Stanifer picked up his second win of the season, and improved his record to 2-3, while lowering his ERA to 4.46 and WHIP to 1.54. While these numbers don’t jump off the page quite yet, it wasn’t too long ago that Stanifer found himself with an ERA of 7.71, so the results over the past month have been very encouraging.
Over four starts during May, Stanifer has thrown 19 2/3 innings, in which he’s allowed three earned runs, and dropped his opponents’ average against from .290 entering May to .239 following Wednesday night’s victory.
While walks can be a concern – highlighted by nine he’s issued in May – the strikeout potential that Stanifer possesses is what has caught the eye of many Blue Jays fans who track the minor league levels. After Wednesday’s three-strikeout showing, the 22-year-old raised his season total to 46 over 38 1/3 innings, a strong mark for such a young arm at the Double-A level.
Other prospect notes
Juan Sanchez appears to be starting to find his stride. After getting off to a slow start with Dunedin in Single-A, during which the 18-year-old opened by batting .152 over his first 26 games, Sanchez’s past five contests have been a stark contrast. He’s gone 9-for-22 with two doubles and a triple, raising his season average to .190, including Wednesday night’s 3-for-5 effort.
Eddie Micheletti Jr. continued his strong finish to May during the Fisher Cats’ 7-3 win on Wednesday night. Micheletti went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, raising his season average to .258, his home run total to eight, and his RBI total to 24. After yesterday’s contest, Micheletti is 10-for-29 over his past seven games with two home runs and three RBIs.
22-year-old Cutter Coffey has found himself in a groove at the plate as of late with the Fisher Cats. On Wednesday night, Coffey went 2-for-4, blasted his first home run of the season, and drove in three runs. Over his past 22 games, Coffey is batting .299 as he continues to rebound from April, when he batted .167. Acquired from the Boston Red Sox as part of the return for Danny Jansen, Coffey has climbed a level during each season in the Blue Jays’ farm system.
In more concerning news, Blue Jays’ 2023 first-round draft pick Arjun Nimmala departed Wednesday’s contest with an apparent injury.
Nimmala was injured while beating out an infield single during the top of the fourth inning in the Fisher Cats’ 7-3 win. After earning the promotion to Double-A on May 3, Nimmala has impressed with the Fisher Cats.
Over 18 games, the 20-year-old is batting .308 with a .375 on-base percentage as he continues to flash the promise the Blue Jays’ organization saw in the Florida native.
