Another Toronto Blue Jays prospect may soon be headed for season-ending surgery.
Right-hander Chay Yeager experienced elbow discomfort while throwing last week and is set to meet with renowned specialist Dr. Keith Meister, where they’ll discuss next steps, including the possibility of surgery, manager John Schneider told reporters pre-game Tuesday.
The Blue Jays skipper noted, in particular, that “surgery is on the table” for the 23-year-old prospect, as MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson relayed.
Reading the tea leaves here, all indications would suggest Yeager is slated to miss extended time this season, if not the entire campaign, depending on whether any structural damage is found in his elbow. If it ends up being the latter, that’d signal the end of his 2026 campaign before it even begins and would also likely sideline him into next season.
Yeager, attending Blue Jays’ camp as a non-roster invitee, split last season between High-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire, logging 55.2 combined innings. But he wound up finishing the year on the organization’s development list before participating in the Arizona Fall League, adding another eight innings to his 2025 total.
The right-handed reliever excelled while repeating the High-A circuit, posting a 1.77 ERA and 2.66 FIP with a stellar 22.2 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate (K-BB%) across 25 appearances, racking up four saves. He made the jump to Double-A before the All-Star break arrived, and despite a few blow-ups, still punched out almost a quarter of his batters faced in 17 appearances — including four of the seven he faced in his final outing with New Hampshire last September.
Losing Yeager for the entire season would be a tough blow to the organization’s reliever depth, as the 2023 12th-round selection — who’ll be Rule-5-eligible next off-season — figured to be a potential second-half Triple-A promotion candidate with his plus-fastball and high swing-and-miss slider.
But now he’s in danger of losing an entire development year due to elbow surgery.
