Schreck is love, Schreck is life.
It’s trade O’clock, as the Blue Jays have made another trade, moving Justin Turner to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RJ Schreck.
Schreck is a 24-year-old left-handed batting outfielder selected in the ninth-round of the 2023 draft by the Mariners. He spent five seasons in college. the first four with Duke University, before transferring to Vanderbilt University for his final season. Overall, he slashed .294/.415/.532 with 40 home runs in 857 plate appearances, along with 114 walks to 136 strikeouts.
Making his professional debut shortly after being drafted, Schreck slashed .258/.336/.392 with two homers in 110 plate appearances between Seattle’s Arizona Complex League team and their Single-A team.
Schreck started this season in High-A with the Everett AquaSox, slashing .261/.401/.464 with 12 home runs in 344 plate appearances, along with a 16.6 BB% and a 13.7 K% for a 148 wRC+. However, his tenure with Seattle’s Double-A team hadn’t gone as well, slashing .143/.294/.250 with no homers in 34 plate appearances, along with an 11.8 BB% and a 20.6 K% for a 64 wRC+.
RJ SCHRECK BREAKS THE TIE! FROGS LEAD 4-1!
According to MLB Pipeline, Schreck ranked as the Mariners’ 29th-best prospect. He has a terrific approach at the plate. You can see this in his walk rate compared to strike out rate in High-A this season. There’s some pop in his bat, but as a corner outfielder due to his slow footspeed, the pop isn’t exactly where you want it to be for the position.
As for grades, Schreck was given a 45 hit tool, a 40 power tool, a 40 run tool, a 50 arm tool and a 50 field tool for a 40 overall grade. Although MLB Pipeline doesn’t have a grade for names, Schreck without question, has an 80-grade name.
Schreck's all ogre that one!!! @SchreckRJ with an amazing diving grab in left field!
Personally, I see a bit of Alan Roden in Schreck, with the advanced approach at the plate. The hit tool is worse, but Schreck probably has more pop in his bat. Overall, this was a solid trade for the Jays.
