The Toronto Blue Jays are… winning games?
On Saturday afternoon, they defeated the reigning World Series champs, the Texas Rangers, 7-3 to move their record to 48-56. Still well out of the race, but a nice win nonetheless.
The Rangers took the lead in the top of the first inning, as former Blue Jay Marcus Semien hit a lead-off triple and was later cashed in. However, the Blue Jays answered back with four runs of their own in the first, thanks mainly to a Daulton Varsho oppo-taco. More on this inning and the home run in “things worth mentioning”.
However, Texas would show a little fight in the top of the third, as Wyatt Langford hit a double that scored Semien, before Adolis García cashed him in with a single, making it 4-3.
That was all the runs the Rangers scored though, as Alejandro Kirk drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth, Spencer Horwitz hit a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth, as did Daulton Varsho in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Blue Jays a 7-3 win.

Things worth mentioning…

Kevin Gausman had a terrific outing, pitching a complete game for the second time this season, finishing with a line of 9 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8 K to bring his season ERA to 4.44. Thankfully, Toronto’s bullpen didn’t need any work on Saturday.
Daulton Varsho hit a home run, his 12th of the season. Interestingly, this was only the third opposite field home run of his career, with the last one coming at the beginning of April last season.
In the first inning, George Springer and Spencer Horwitz were out, giving the Jays two early outs. However, the next seven batters reached base with a hit or a walk, leading to the Jays knocking out Michael Lorenzen before he could even finish an inning of work. It’s easily the best inning the bats have had all season.
Steward Berroa hit a double, his first hit in the big leagues. On top of that, he also drew a walk in the first inning, a great sign. Speaking of hits, three Blue Jays hitters had three hits, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Justin Turner, and Alejandro Kirk each had three hits (one double, two singles).
Up next: The Blue Jays have a chance to sweep a series for the second time on Sunday, as they’ll host the Rangers for the final game of the series at 1:37 PM ET. José Berríos is slated to start that game.
