The Toronto Blue Jays have started another losing streak.
While it doesn’t match the tough stretch the club went through against Colorado, Chicago, and Los Angeles, the Blue Jays allowed 19 runs over the three-game set against Minnesota and dropped the finale against the Twins by a score of 8-2.
The Jays sent Max Scherzer to the mound for his third start of the campaign, and after cruising through the first inning, the wheels started to fall off for the right-hander. He surrendered a three-run home run to Tristan Gray to give the Twins a 3-1 lead, and he could not escape the third inning before being tagged with eight runs on the day.
Scherzer wasn’t creating much swing and miss and hung a few pitches that the Twins pounced on, with two home runs and two walks being credited to the veteran starter compared to three strikeouts. Left-hander Joe Mantiply took over for Scherzer in the top of the third, and would go an inning and two-thirds with just two hits allowed with one strikeout.
Behind Scherzer, the Blue Jays’ bullpen was firing on all cylinders.
Everyone but Spencer Miles (who pitched a ton on Saturday) and Braydon Fisher (pitched Friday) found time on the mound, and the Jays’ relievers allowed just three collective hits while striking out nine. Louis Varland struck out the side in his outing, and Mason Fluharty and Jeff Hoffman have added two punchouts apiece to their yearly totals.
While Scherzer had his tough inning, the Blue Jays’ bats didn’t have much to boast about today.
The club’s RISP issues were on full display, and the club went 2 for 14 with 12 batters left on base. They struck out nine times (Jesus Sanchez, Brandon Valenzuela, and Eloy Jimenez had two apiece), and the club could not capitalize on the four walks and 12 hits, outhitting the Twins in this afternoon’s contest.
Jimenez made his Jays debut this afternoon with George Springer on the IL with a fractured toe, and he had a solid day at the plate despite the two K’s. He went 2 for 4 and was putting some solid power on the ball.
Daulton Varsho was the top bat in the lineup, going 3 for 5 with one RBI and one double, while Ernie Clement also went 3 for 5 at the top of the order and accounted for both Jays runs that crossed home plate. Andres Gimenez (x2), Jesus Sanchez, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also got in on the hit action. Sanchez added an RBI with his sac fly in the bottom of the seventh.

Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes, and Brandon Valenzuela put up zeros in the hit column, although credit to Okamoto and Valenzuela for each getting a walk today.
The Jays will be heading on the road to face the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game set that begins Tuesday. It will be a pitching duel, with the Jays sending right-hander Kevin Gausman to the hill while the Brewers will counter with fireballer Jacob Misiorowski.
