The Blue Jays’ magical winning record at home has come to an end thanks to three home runs from the Bronx Bombers.
Tabbed with starting duties this evening was right-hander Max Scherzer, who was making his sixth start of the season.
Scherzer fell behind early, with Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger getting on base in the first inning with zero outs. While Scherzer handled Aaron Judge, a six-pitch at-bat went Jazz Chisholm Jr’s way in the form of a home run over the right field wall, turning on a 3-2 fastball right down the middle. This gave the Yankees a quick 3-0 lead.
The future Hall of Famer would hold the Yankees bats at bay until the top of the fifth inning, when Cody Bellinger launched a solo shot of his own over the right-centre field wall, giving the Bronx Bombers a 4-1 lead. That would be Scherzer’s final frame, as he would be pulled in favour of Mason Fluharty. His final line would be five hits, four earned runs, two home runs, one walk, and four strikeouts, bumping his ERA to 5.14 on the year.
Fluharty would pitch two brilliant frames, holding the Yankees’ bats off the scoresheet. Justin Bruihl would follow in the top of the eighth, allowing just one walk while striking out two.
Jeff Hoffman took over in the ninth inning and surrendered a towering solo shot to Ben Rice, giving the Yankees a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Yankees closer Devin Williams came into the bottom of the ninth looking for the save with Toronto’s big bats up to the plate in Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Barger. Williams has struggled against Toronto earlier this season, and Guerrero tagged him for a single to put a runner on early. Bichette would chase a ball in the dirt for the first out of the inning, and Barger just missed tagging a Williams fastball for a double in the gap. Alejandro Kirk would follow, and the Yankees hurler
For the Yankees, right-hander Cam Schlittler got the start – the second start in his young MLB career. His final line would be five innings, seven hits, two earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts, with the Yankees starter throwing 90 pitches on the day.
His two runs against came off the bat of Addison Barger. Once in the first inning, he dropped a single to left field to score George Springer, and in the bottom of the fifth, another single that scored Springer.
The Jays’ bats would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Myles Straw getting the party started due to a throwing error from Anthony Volpe. A double from Davis Schneider would see Straw score, making it 4-3 for New York, before a Springer single to right field saw Schneider score the tying run at the time before Rice put them ahead and eventually, on ice.
The Jays collectively earned 11 hits on the day and four walks, but left 11 runners on base and went 3 for 13 with RISP.
With this loss, the Blue Jays will look to take the series win tomorrow night with Chris Bassitt taking the mound for Toronto. Southpaw Max Fried will toe the rubber for New York.
