The Toronto Blue Jays’ losing streak now stands at four games.

The Blue Jays fell 4-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre and now find themselves with a record of 46-56 through 102 games.

After the Blue Jays opened the scoring for the first time in their past three games on a George Springer RBI groundout in the first inning, the Rays answered right back in the top of the second on a Victor Mesa Jr. RBI single that brought home Chandler Simpson.

The next three innings were scoreless as Blue Jays right-hander Spencer Miles and Rays starter Griffin Jax traded zeroes. The outing for Miles was a nice bounce-back showing after being tagged for six earned runs over four innings during his previous outing against the Chicago White Sox last Friday.

Miles, working as the bulk guy, turned in a pitching line of 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K and continued to give the Blue Jays’ offence every chance to break through. For the season, the off-season Rule 5 Draft pick is now 4-2 with a 3.33 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. The 25-year-old has struck out 65 batters over his 67.2 frames, and is looking like a mainstay on the Blue Jays’ pitching staff for years to come.

Immediately following Miles’ exit, the Rays offence came to life against Jeff Hoffman, started by a Daulton Varsho error for the second night in a row. Varsho misplayed Yandy Díaz’s leadoff fly ball to centre, setting the Rays up with a runner on second base with nobody out.

Hoffman struck out Jonathan Aranda, but Junior Caminero singled to centre and the next batter, Cedric Mullins, was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Simpson lifted a sacrifice fly to centre, and then Mesa followed with a single to left field, which gave the Rays a 3-1 lead and ended Hoffman’s night in favour of Mason Fluharty.

Taylor Walls welcomed Fluharty with a bunt single, and pinch-hitter Ben Williamson worked a four-pitch walk, giving the Rays a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. Jax continued his strong night, finishing with a pitching line of 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, tying the longest outing of his big-league career.

After Jax threw 83 pitches, Rays manager Kevin Cash turned to left-hander Cam Booser, and Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk made him pay. Kirk smashed a 1-2 cutter from Booser 406 feet over the left-field wall for his third home run of the season, and first since June 27.

Kirk’s 2026 season to this point has been the most difficult of the 27-year-old’s career, as he has only been able to appear in 31 games after spending over two months on the injured list due to a fractured left thumb. When healthy, Kirk is batting just .218 with three home runs and 11 RBIs through 101 at-bats.

A 4-2 score is as close as the Blue Jays would get as Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker combined to shut down Toronto’s offence over the game’s final 2.1 innings and improve the Rays’ record to 59-42 through 101 games.

The Blue Jays will look to salvage the final game of their four-game series against the Rays on Thursday. Shane Bieber will take the mound while the Rays will counter with left-hander Ian Seymour.

First pitch is 3:07 p.m. EST at Rogers Centre.
