The Toronto Blue Jays’ 9-3 win over the New York Mets on Canada Day felt like it could be a turning point for the club during the 2026 regular season, but what has followed in the four games since has placed the Blue Jays at what feels like rock bottom.
In the four games following that statement victory, the Blue Jays have scored only three runs and have faltered in about every statistical category imaginable. While the offensive struggles have drawn much of the headlines, the defence has committed five errors in the past three losses, and the pitching has allowed at least 10 runs in two of the three losses.
While these past few games have left a sour taste in the mouths of everyone around the organization, the Blue Jays still sit only 3.5 games out of the American League’s final Wild Card spot with a record of 42-49. With a crowded AL playoff picture, one good stretch could propel the Blue Jays back into a playoff spot as the summer moves on.
Looking to snap their three-game funk, the Blue Jays will turn to right-hander Spencer Miles on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants. Miles will square off against the organization that originally drafted him in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
Miles climbed as high as Single-A in the Giants organization before undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of 2024, which ended up costing him the entirety of the 2025 season. After being kept off the Giants’ 40-man roster this past December, the Blue Jays selected Miles with the 10th overall selection in the Rule 5 draft, a shock at the time, as Miles had only tossed 14.2 innings since turning professional.
To say the decision has worked out would be an understatement. Through 24 games with the Blue Jays this season, Miles is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP over 54 innings pitched. Miles has made two starts, filled a bulk role due to injuries, and pitched in leverage situations as his role has continued to grow. In his 54 frames, Miles has punched out 55 batters, largely thanks to his power sinker, which averages 96.1 MPH.
The Giants (38-52) will counter with right-hander Trevor McDonald. Through 11 starts, McDonald is 3-6 with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Across 57 innings, McDonald has struck out 50 batters and held opposing teams to a .236 average, giving the Blue Jays another tough test for an offence looking to get going.
