After Wednesday night’s trade, sending veteran Kendrys Morales to the Oakland Athletics, the Toronto Blue Jays have been moving some pieces around.
Calling up 24-year-old outfielder Anthony Alford immediately following the trade, but now it appears another young player who saw some big league time last year is with the club.
In a somewhat ominous way, Jeff Blair has (somewhat) reported that Rowdy Tellez is in fact in Toronto and might join the team sooner rather than later.
Late on Wednesday night, there were also some skeptical rumours that Tellez would not only be called up but would be in the Jays’ Opening Day lineup.
Tellez, 24, in 70 at-bats, slashed .314/.329/.614, batted-in 14 runs and hit four home runs after an emotional beginning to his Jays career late last season. In spring this year, he was able to hold a .908 OPS and had a team-leading five home runs.
This could be the result of another trade or (more likely) another position player moving to the Injured List, only hours away from the first pitch of the season.
It was either going to be Alford or Tellez that got the call following the Morales trade, so why not do both, I guess?
UPDATE:
It turns out Tellez did, in fact, crack the 25-man roster while Alford didn’t. That said, Alford is also in Toronto, so maybe something is up
