The Toronto Blue Jays have to find a way to win the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.
For the first time since their series in Phoenix against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Jays have lost a series. Their last season loss was in the middle stop in a three-city road trip, taking on the Milwaukee Brewers before and the Los Angeles Angels after. In the end, the Jays were 4-5 on that road trip, but won three of the last four games.
Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against the Rays is the final game of the seven-game r0ad trip, and so far, the Jays are 2-4. They’ve lost three consecutive games, falling in the series finale against the Minnesota Twins, and dropping the first two games of this series.
They’ve dropped more series than they’ve won this season, but the Jays have only been swept once in 2026. They dropped all three against the Chicago White Sox in early April, and lost Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger in the process. A win on Wednesday afternoon is a must. But it’s easier said than done.
The 23-12 Rays have Shane McClanahan starting on Wednesday afternoon. This season, the left-handed pitcher has a 3.10 ERA and 2.87 FIP in 29 innings pitched, with a 24.8 K% and 10.7 BB%. Since breaking into the big leagues in 2021, McClanahan has a 2.44 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched over eight starts.
Starting for the Blue Jays is left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin. His performance through five starts has been solid, with the veteran posting a 3.65 ERA and 4.32 FIP in 24.2 innings pitched. Four of his 10 earned runs came in his season debut, as Corbin has a 2.61 ERA and 3.14 FIP in his past four starts.
With a lefty on the mound for the Rays, the Blue Jays turn to their right-handed lineup. The lone lefty in their lineup is Yohendrick Piñango, who is batting .455 with a 180 wRC+ in his first 23 plate appearances. George Springer leads off, Kazuma Okamoto hits second, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats third.
Cleaning up is Lenyn Sosa, who is slashing .267/.261/.400 with a home run in 47 plate appearances since joining the Blue Jays. With no Andrés Giménez in the starting lineup, Ernie Clement shifts to shortstop and hits fifth, followed by Davis Schneider, who is in left field. Their bottom third is comprised of Myles Straw, Piñango, and Tyler Heineman, who gets the start behind the plate for the first time this series.
Let’s set up Wednesday’s series finale.
