The Toronto Blue Jays added some international flavour with their 13th round pick.
For the second consecutive pick, they selected a collegiate pitcher, drafting University of Kansas right-handed pitcher Mathis Nayral.
Nayral was born in Montpellier, France and turned 22 years old back in April. He came to North America when he was 19, according to this terrific article by Wave the Wheat’s Matt Tait. The right-handed pitcher joined Cochise College, a junior college, for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 season.
Before the start of the 2026 season, Nayral transferred to the University of Kansas, where he made 17 starts in 18 appearances. The right-handed pitcher finished the season with a 4.96 ERA and 5.54 FIP in 69 innings of work, paired with a 22.8 K% and 9 BB%.
Nayral’s fastball sits in the low-90s, but reaches 95-96 mph. Standing at 6’5”, it’s unclear what other pitches make up his arsenal.
Like all players selected in rounds 11-20, this pick has a slot value of $150,000. As long as they don’t go over, none of that will count towards the team’s actual bonus pool. But anything over it, the difference will go towards it.
