The Toronto Blue Jays aced the 2024 trade deadline, acquiring two prospects in their top 10 list, including Yohendrick Piñango.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s bi-annual prospect ranking, where we’ll look at the top 35 prospects in the system in the month of February. As always, I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players. If you missed the 11th-ranked prospect, you can read about Victor Arias here.
Getting to know Yohendrick Piñango…
Position: Outfield
Bats: Left
Born: May 7th, 2002
Acquired: Trade with Chicago Cubs
Previous ranking: 11th
The Chicago Cubs signed Piñango during the 2018 international free agency period for a bonus of $400,000. His 2019 was spent in rookie ball, before spending parts of the 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 season with their High-A team. Finally, he slashed .340/.451/.610 with five home runs in 122 plate appearances to begin the 2024 season, earning a call-up to Double-A.
Piñango was fine at the level, slashing .223/.316/.345 with four home runs in 225 plate appearances for a 98 wRC+. A few days before the 2024 trade deadline, the Cubs sent him and Josh Rivera to the Blue Jays for Nate Pearson. With the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Piñango slashed .179/.244/.274 with a home run in 127 plate appearances.
There was a lot to like about the outfielder’s game, namely his serious raw power, but he hadn’t quite broken out yet. Then the 2025 season happened. Beginning the season in Double-A, Piñango slashed .298/.406/.522 with eight home runs in 192 plate appearances for a 169 wRC+. Upon his promotion to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Piñango took a step back, slashing .235/.335/.379 with seven home runs in 341 plate appearances for a 96 wRC+. For the season, he had a 13.1 BB% and 20.1 K%.
Although Piñango hit average at the Triple-A level, there were some encouraging numbers. The outfielder’s average exit velocity was 91.9 mph, in the 89th percentile among players in Triple-A according to Prospect Savant. His maximum exit velocity reached 115.4 mph, one of the hardest hit ball in Triple-A.
There’s some serious raw power in Piñango’s game, but he also makes smart swing decisions. In Triple-A, Piñango had a 20.2 whiff percentage and a 23.85 chase percent, both strong numbers that helped him draw walks. If Piñango’s hit tool can sit around average, there’s the chance to be an everyday player, even with fringe defence and fringe speed.
It’s likely that the outfielder will begin his season in Triple-A. Depending on how he performs, Piñango could be in the conversation for a call up, in the same vain of RJ Schreck, who was also acquired ahead of the 2024 trade deadline.
