A former Toronto Blue Jay has been released from his contract.
On Friday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox announced that a handful of players, including former Blue Jay Ryan Borucki, have been released.
Broucki has had two separate stints with the Blue Jays. The first one came when he was drafted in the 15th-round of the 2012 draft out of high school. The lefty made his debut with the organization in 2018, posting a solid 3.87 ERA and 3.80 FIP in 97.2 innings pitched in 17 starts.
However, injuries plagued him that season, as well as the following season, as he made just two starts in 2019. By 2020, Borucki transitioned to the bullpen, appearing in 21 games during the pandemic-shortened season, where he posted a 2.70 ERA and 3.61 FIP in 16.2 innings.
Unfortunately, Borucki struggled in his 24 outings in 2021, authoring a 4.94 ERA and 5.66 FIP in 23.2 innings pitched. After posting a 9.95 ERA and 7.53 FIP in 6.1 innings pitched over 11 outings in 2022, Borucki was designated for assignment and eventually traded to the Seattle Mariners for Tyler Keenan, who has since retired.
Borucki was fine out of the Mariners bullpen, finishing the 2022 season with a 4.26 ERA and 5.59 FIP in 19 innings pitched. His career-best season was in 2023 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing the year with a 2.45 ERA and 3.50 FIP over 40.1 innings pitched, while his BB% dropped all the way to 2.6%.
The left-handed pitcher couldn’t repeat the same success in 2024, finishing that year with just 11 innings pitched and a 7.36 ERA and 4.53 FIP. Borucki improved slightly while pitching for the Pirates in 2025, finishing his tenure with a 5.28 ERA and 4.34 FIP, but he was released in mid-August and signed with the Jays about a week later.
In early September, the Jays added Borucki to the 26-man roster, where he appeared in four games without giving up an earned run, but struggled with command (21.1 BB%). Borucki was eventually DFA’ed and elected to free agency.
While he was released by the White Sox, Borucki had a strong Spring Training. Over six innings of work, he didn’t allow a run, struck out 38.1% of the batters he faced, and allowed just one walk. There’s a possibility that he finds a home elsewhere after a strong Spring Training, and who knows, maybe he’ll have a third stint with the Jays in the future.
