George Springer is officially back.
The 36-year-old Springer, sidelined for over two weeks after fracturing his big left toe, has been activated off the 10-day injured list prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox, as the Toronto Blue Jays announced.
To make room on the active roster, designated hitter Eloy Jiménez has been DFA’d by the club, who’ll now have the option of placing him on waivers or working out a trade with another team. If he ends up clearing waivers, the veteran slugger would be able to elect free agency or accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Buffalo.
Jiménez was taking ground balls on the field pre-game, working out in case Springer needed another day before returning. The 29-year-old DH, who returned to the franchise on a minor-league deal over the winter, went 9-for-31 (all singles) in 12 games since his call-up, driving in three runs and producing a trio of walks and seven strikeouts.
Springer isn’t in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup on Wednesday, with Yohendrick Pinango drawing the start at DH. But the former will be available off the bench as a pinch hitter versus the Red Sox if needed, and he’ll likely return to his usual leadoff position in Thursday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins.
Prior to landing on the IL, Springer appeared in 14 games and hit a pair of home runs with six RBIs, slashing .185/.290/.370 with an 86 wRC+ (100 league average) across 62 plate appearances. He also registered eight walks and struck out 14 times during that span.
Given all the injuries this organization has endured this season, having two healthy bodies come off the IL in as many days has to feel like a breath of fresh air — and with Addison Barger and José Berríos not far behind, there’s more help coming soon.
Despite currently sitting 13-16, things are finally starting to trend upwards for the Blue Jays lately, both in the health department and in the standings, as they’ll have a chance to win their third straight series with a victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday.
