Spencer Miles is my favorite bullpen arm to watch this spring. His arsenal is highlighted by an elite sinker (misclassified as a changeup) which generates 9 inches of vertical separation and 8 inches of horizontal separation from his four-seam. From a Stuff+ standpoint it Show more

With three games already in the books for spring training in Dunedin, all eyes are looking to see who’s going to take the reins and earn a bullpen spot come late March. With Yimi Garcia on pace to not be ready for Opening Day, it opens the door for the team to get another arm into the team and make an impact for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Enter Spencer Miles, the Rule-5 draft pick that the organization selected from the San Francisco Giants this past winter.
Miles was drafted by the Giants back in 2022 and was the #28th-ranked prospect in 2023. He was an arm believed to be a quality starting rotation arm, capable of throwing hard and featuring a great sinker that created ground ball contact.
Miles made his spring debut this past Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, and he already is putting fans’ eyes on him after a scoreless debut in which he struck out Trevor Story with a nasty curveball. Miles, 25, is someone who is recovering from Tommy John Surgery in the summer of 2024 and hasn’t pitched above Single-A ball in his professional career, but he is showcasing that he has the tools to succeed at the major league level despite the lack of innings.
Despite Tommy John Surgery, his fastball velocity topped out at about 96 on Sunday, and he threw 55% strikes on 20 pitches in the top of the fifth inning. He managed to strand a double by Jarren Duran and a pitch-clock walk to Wilson Contreras before getting out the next two batters, Wilyer Abreu and Caleb Durbin.
Should Miles not crack the Opening Day roster, he has to be offered back to the Giants, but he is someone who can get an extended look over the spring and vie for a spot in the bullpen. There is some stiff competition for bullpen spots, including Tommy Nance (out of options) and some players who made an impact in 2025, like Mason Fluharty and Braydon Fisher, as well as fellow Rule 5 pick Angel Bastardo.
But Miles could find his way to the big leagues if he continues to throw well this spring and separates himself as a guy with ‘stuff’ to a reliever that manager John Schneider can count on despite the lack of innings. Miles will need to reel in the walks as the spring progresses – he has three to his name already – but the strikeout stuff is there if he can locate his pitches.
Generating 33.3% whiffs on pitches with a wicked curveball to fool major league pitching can get Miles a lot more innings this spring. His curveball was on full display in his debut in the spring, and could be a pitch he works on a lot to generate more chases from batters. Soon, we will find out if Miles is an arm that can stay in the bullpen.
