The Blue Jays just picked their second position player of the day.
With the 484th overall pick, the Blue Jays selected catcher Jackson Hornung from Skidmore College in Sarasota Springs, New York.
In his senior year, he slashed .424/.560/.803 with 12 homers in 175 plate appearances, and walked a lot more (21.1 BB%) than he struck out (12 K%). For his collegiate career, he slashed .430/.540/.735 with 22 homers in 441 plate appearances. Oddly enough, he didn’t play much in his first two seasons.
It appears that he could was (or still is) committed to Kansas State University, as he has the school in his Instagram bio, but this isn’t confirmed.
Another interesting note about Hornung is the fact that he was a two-start athlete in high school. However, his second sport was not a traditional one such as football or basketball, as he played hockey as a defenceman. In fact, he’s the only player I know that has both a Baseball Reference page and an Elite Prospects page, two sites I frequently visit for articles.
Skidmore College is in Division III of the NCAA, so it’ll be interesting to see how Hornung transitions to professional ball.
