There are a handful of intriguing relievers in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system with potential, including the prospect we’ll look at today, Yondrei Rojas.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
I’ve been pretty high on Rojas since 2022, but the 22-year-old has hit a new level. Thanks to a strong season, the right-handed pitcher ranks as our 41st-best prospect in the mid-season prospect countdown. If you missed the last article, Yeuni Muñoz ranked as the 42nd-best prospect in the system.
Getting to know Yondrei Rojas…
Position: Relief pitcher
Throws: Right
Born: November 22, 2002
Acquired: 2021 International Free Agency
Previous ranking: 49th (2023 pre-season)
Rojas signed in the 2021 International Free Agency period out of Venezuela. The reliever made his professional debut that season, authoring a 2.95 ERA and 2.74 FIP in 16 games, or 21.1 innings pitched. Rojas also struck out 28.1% of batters and had a 9.4 BB%.
The following season, Rojas split his time between the Florida Complex League and Single-A, where he had a 4.89 ERA and 4.50 FIP in 46 innings pitched. That season, Rojas made eight starts in 11 appearances, and even ranked as our 49th-best prospect heading into the 2023 season.
Unfortunately, the 2023 season wasn’t great for Rojas, as he had a 5.66 ERA and 4.88 FIP in 49.1 innings pitched with the Dunedin Blue Jays, with eight of his 14 appearances coming as starts. He moved to full-time relief duties in 2024 with the D-Jays, where he had a 4.36 ERA and FIP in 43.1 innings pitched, with a 29.1 K% and an 11.2 BB%.
Rojas missed the first month or so of the 2025 season, but he’s been a totally different beast this season. Spending the majority of his time with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, the 22-year-old had a 1.90 ERA and 1.74 FIP in 23.2 innings pitched. His K% ballooned (a good thing) to 38.3%, while his BB% plummeted to 6.4%. Rojas even earned a promotion to Double-A New Hampshire, where he’s appeared in three games and allowed a run inning and a third.
The reason I was high on Rojas in 2022 is that, despite standing at 5’10”, 180 lbs, his fastball touched 96 mph. Last season in Single-A, the fastball averaged 93 mph, but he’s now sitting in the mid-to-upper-90s with the heater. Rounding out his pitch mix are a cutter, slider, and changeup. He’s maxed out a 97 mph this season.
If Rojas can pitch with the Fisher Cats the way he did with the Canadians, he could become one of the organization’s best relief prospects. The stuff is legit, but it’s all about finding consistency and throwing strikes.
