Dasan Brown is a familiar name in these parts.
Drafted by the Blue Jays in 2019, he earned an overslot $800,000 signing bonus to turn pro instead of heading to Texas A&M, becoming the first Canuck drafted that year ahead of Jake Sanford (Yankees) and Matt Brash (Padres).
A contact-first bat standing at 6-foot-1, Brown’s calling card was his plus speed and his ability to play any outfield position with ease, showing plus skills as a defender with the hope that development in the system might bring some power to his bat. He appeared in 14 games following the draft and then was dealt a tough hand, missing the 2020 season while the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all minor league baseball. He was also named to the Team Canada roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, appearing in two games.
Since then, Brown has been slowly climbing the minor league ladder, having hit every rung of the farm system on his way to Triple-A Buffalo, which he reached last year. The year before, he snagged a Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2024 for his highlight reel catches and six outfield assists that year.
2025 Season
Brown started the year in Double-A New Hampshire, playing in seven games before a brief stint on the IL. He returned in late April, where he stayed with the club for the majority of the campaign.
Across 86 games, the right-handed bat produced a .175/.286/.249 slash line with a .535 OPS, stealing 31 bases while adding six doubles, one triple, and three home runs with 14 RBIs. In early September, the Canadian got bumped up to Triple-A Buffalo, where he finished the year, posting a .154/.267/.462 slash line across 13 at-bats. During the small sample size, he collected one double and one home run while stealing five bases, walking twice, compared to two strikeouts.
Defensively, Brown spent most of his time in centre field, where he posted a .980 fielding percentage across 490 1/3 innings with the Fisher Cats.
At the end of the season, Brown was designated a minor league free agent and signed a MiLB deal with the Milwaukee Brewers on January 9th.
Looking Ahead to 2026
In terms of the Brewers’ outfield picture, Brown is in with some tough competition.
The reigning NL Central champs boast a solid core of Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Blake Perkins, and Christian Yelich, who can also play in the outfield when needed. In terms of depth, the Brewers also have fellow Canuck Tyler Black (who has been getting reps in left field), Akil Badoo, Brandon Lockridge, and former Jays outfielder Steward Berroa in the mix, as well as Greg Jones, who is in camp on a MiLB deal.
For Brown, the outfielder likely heads back down to Triple-A while he waits in the wings for an opportunity in the big leagues unless the Brewers value his plus speed and defensive ability on the bench. Finding some more contact in his bat will see him sit higher on the depth charts, but it will be an uphill battle in an organization that has so many options in the outfield at the top of the food chain.
Defense will always be Brown’s calling card, but he will make an even stronger case if his bat can find a way to produce some more steady contact as a top-of-the-order type player.
