It took a while for Alex De Jesus to be the prospect the Jays thought they were getting, but he’s had a great season in 2023.
Just a quick recap of the mid-season list: We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and finally other publications (Prospects Live, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America)’ scouting reports.
Let’s take a gander at De Jesus.

Getting to know Alex De Jesus…

Position: Third baseman/Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: March 22, 2002
Acquired: Trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers
Current Team: High-A Vancouver
Previous Ranking: 19
The Blue Jays acquired De Jesus (along with Mitch White) in a trade with the Dodgers at the 2022 deadline, moving prospects Nick Frasso and Moises Brito. After breaking out in 2022 in the Dodgers system, he struggled after the trade, slashing just .211/.298/.333 with two homers in 104 plate appearances with the High-A Vancouver Canadians.
It was a tough start to his 2023 as well, but after getting hot, the 21-year-old is now slashing .250/.341/.472 with 11 homers in 337 plate appearances. Moreover, his K% is down from around 28% to 25.8% in 2023. His BB% sits at 11.6%. He also hit for his second career cycle earlier in 2023.
De Jesus has a power-over-hit profile, with significant raw power in his bat (MLB Pipeline has him at a 55 grade). His hit tool isn’t the worst, as he has the ability to shoot the ball the other way and draw a walk.
Defensively, he has a very strong arm that suits him well at third base, as MLB Pipeline grades it at 65. In terms of fielding, he’s got solid hands, but will likely play more of the hot corner as he rises up the minor leagues. He’s a below-average runner.
After a tough start to his Blue Jays career, it appears that De Jesus has found his game. He’s still rather young, so it’d be very early to give up on the left-sided infielder. The upper minors will be a big test for De Jesus.
