A product of the Toronto Mets organization, Mitch Bratt has been one of the top Canadian arms coming up in the system. Bratt was also a frequent name on the Junior National Team, joining the squad at 15 years old. With COVID sweeping through his late high school years, Bratt went down south to Georgia Premier Academy, which helped improve his draft stock.

Bratt also improved his draft stock by pitching in the MLB Draft League, where he pitched to a 2.57 ERA across 28 innings, allowing just eight runs while striking out 44 batters.

Drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2021, Bratt turned pro instead of heading to Florida State and started working his way up the minor league ladder. Heading into 2025, Bratt had made a handful of starts in Double-A Frisco and was poised to head back to the level for the 2025 season.

For those who don’t regularly follow Canadian baseball may remember Bratt from the 2023 World Baseball Classic. The teenager was tasked with starting against a star-studded Team USA squad, and although he struggled in his lone inning of work, he put himself on the map with a gutsy performance that earned him praise from many industry pundits.

The southpaw went back to Frisco to begin the 2025 season, making 18 appearances before he was shipped to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of the trade package for starter Merrill Kelly.

Before the trade, Bratt posted a 3.18 ERA with a 10.5 K/9 and a 1.6 BB/9 and continued to pitch well with his new organization, allowing just 14 earned runs across 31 2/3 innings with the Amarillo Sod Poodles.

On the season, Bratt made 23 starts (24 outings) and pitched a career high 122 1/3 innings. He finished the year with a collective 10.9 K/9, 1.5 BB/9 and a 1.169 WHIP. He did see a slight increase in his H/9 (9.0) compared to his previous years’ numbers, as well as allowing 18 home runs, but he was an effective starter in Double-A and really honed in on his command, which produced impressive results.

Bratt enters the 2026 season knocking on the big league door.

The Diamondbacks added Bratt to their 40-man roster this winter to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, and the left-hander is not pitching for Team Canada at the WBC this year as he vies for a spot on the big league roster.

There’s no guarantee Bratt snags a spot on the rotation even with a solid spring showing, as the Dbacks may wish to give Bratt some reps in Triple-A before he jumps to the next level at just 22 years old. The recent re-additions of Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen to short-term deals, along with signing fellow Canuck Michael Soroka, make things a bit tight in the rotation as well, as they now have six arms with big league experience heading into camp.

The Diamondbacks’ ninth-ranked prospect will be in for a big season and could be gracing a big league diamond sometime in 2026. Injuries and poor performance in the big leagues might have to open a spot for the Newmarket product, but a strong showing in Triple-A will go a long way for Bratt, who has shone at every level so far.
