Blue Jays Nation’s countdown of the top Canadian prospects entering 2026 continues with a starting pitcher who was taken by the Los Angeles Angels with the 2nd overall pick in last year’s draft.
# 4 – Tyler Bremner
Hometown: San Diego, California
Organization: Los Angeles Angels
Draft: 1st round (2nd overall), 2025 (LAA)
Position: Pitcher
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Although he was expected to be selected in the top 10 or 15 picks of the first round, the Angels made the surprising call to take Tyler Bremner with the 2nd overall pick last July. They were able to sign the former UCSB Gaucho to a contract that was $2.5 million under slot, allowing them to spend more throughout the rest of the draft. Bremner’s former college catcher (from 2023-2024) is Blue Jays prospect Aaron Parker.
The six-foot-two right-hander’s three pitch mix – a mid-high 90’s fastball, an electric changeup that many called the best in the draft, and an upper 80’s slider – gives him one of the highest floors of any pitcher in last year’s draft class. However, there is some reliever risk to his projection, as he was not consistently stretched out as a starting pitcher in college.
Bremner’s ties to Canada closely resemble those of future Hall of Famer and two-time Canadian National Teamer Freddie Freeman. Like Freeman, Bremner was born and raised in California by parents who originated from Ontario. Both players’ mothers also tragically passed away after battles with cancer, with Bremner losing his mother just a month before last year’s draft. He will certainly continue to honour her memory in his playing career moving forward.
2025 Season
After two collegiate seasons in Santa Barbara jockeying between the rotation and bullpen, Bremner had a chance to start full-time in 2025. Across 14 starts, he produced a 3.49 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, with a sparkling 12.9 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9. He showed remarkable command of his arsenal over his college career – a 2.3 BB/9 career mark – encouraging scouts that he can develop into a top-of-the-rotation starter in time.
MLB Pipeline’s 88th-ranked prospect suffered from a bit of bad luck in 2025, carrying a .325 BABIP across his season. The Angels were undoubtedly impressed by his 2.14 FIP, suggesting that his numbers could have been even better last season. Bremner didn’t pitch in the Angels organization after being selected.
Looking ahead to 2026
Bremner is set to make his professional debut this spring, which will likely occur either with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga or High-A Tri-City. The Angels are known for fast-tracking their prospects through their system, while not always linearly moving them along. A good example is 2024 2nd round pick Ryan Johnson, who made his professional debut last season in the Angels bullpen, before being stretched out as a starter in High-A ball in the 2nd half of the year.
Although the Halos are unlikely to rush their top pick along, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see him make his big league debut by season’s end. A successful season and Major League debut would give the right-hander a great chance to take the top spot on our list next year. It remains to be seen if Bremner would entertain playing for Canada in international competition. If he does, he could be a key arm in the next iteration of the World Baseball Classic.
