Today’s prospect could be the Toronto Blue Jays’ next superstar.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our best Blue Jays prospect, Arjun Nimmala!
Getting to know Arjun Nimmala…
Position: Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: October 16, 2005
Acquired: 1st-round, 2023 draft
Previous ranking: 1st
The Blue Jays drafted Nimmala with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 draft out of high school. He made his professional debut a few weeks later, slashing .200/.500/.320 with no home runs in 40 plate appearances with the Florida Complex League team.
Nimmala had a tough start to his 2024 season in Single-A. Overall, he slashed just .167/.280/.306 with three home runs in 125 plate appearances, with a 34.4 K% and a 12 BB% from the start of the season until May 12. The shortstop was sent down to the FCL and his season took off. From Jun. 3 until the end of the season, the 19-year-old slashed .263/.346/.565 with 14 home runs in 266 plate appearances with a 9 BB% and a 28.9 K% for a 149 wRC+.
Between the two levels, Nimmala slashed .232/.325/.482 with 17 home runs in 391 plate appearances. The K% was rather high at 30.7% while he was able to take some walks, finishing with a 10 BB%. Overall, his 125 wRC+ ranked 10th for any player in the system with 250 plate appearances while his home run total ranked tied for third.
Nimmala ranked as MLB Pipeline’s fifth-best prospect in the Blue Jays system in the mid-season update. However, the shortstop ranked as their 87th-best prospect in baseball on the 2025 pre-season list, meaning he’ll be the top prospect in the system according to Pipeline as he just edged out Trey Yesvage, who ranked as the 88th-best prospect in baseball.
His best tool is his power tool, generating great exit velocity with more power when he fills out his 6’1”, 170 lb frame. Nimmala’s hit tool lags behind and he’s prone to some swing and miss and he has a good chance at staying at shortstop.
